Lol, had the same feeling reading DIE, that it was close in theme with M's N. (Also, Donalson's "Real Story", though SF, for a stand alone, and the rest of the GAP series to build in circles around it and mess up everything you thought you knew about the characters and their world.)

Maybe not as "pulpy" but Stephen Donaldson's "Mordant's Need" ? Or "Steel Remains" and "Cold Commands" by Richard Morgan (more pulpy, plays with tropes).
