I grew all these plants from seed, nurtured them, harvested, and dried them in small batches right on my farm to ensure high quality. I crushed the peppers by hand in a mortar and pestle.

I also want to acknowledge the ongoing occupations of Indigenous land the world over: across Turtle Island, the Kingdom of Hawai’i, Puerto Rico, Palestine, Aotearoa, Australia, the Amazon, and so many more peoples and places.

whether the word came from a local Indigenous language or an African language, carried over through the other great horror of US empire: the enslavement of Indigenous Africans. When the town was formerly incorporated, the name was changed to Blythewood, something more European sounding.

At some point, during the ongoing genocide of Indigenous peoples here in the so-called “United States,” the town of Doko was formed in South Carolina. The word likely means “watering place,” though historians are not sure
