When their opposition is typical and their race already delineates the ways in which they are expected to oppose, how can they take charge of their story without defining themselves solely in opposition to subjective constructions? Beauty, as a commercial tool, and romance provide an interesting reference point to analyze the narrative techniques that women of color employ in their music as they talk about their relationship with their race and womanhood. In particular, I am interested in studying how East Asian and Black women singer-songwriters write about how race and beauty play into their romantic experiences and their relationship with worthiness and love. Commonly, the stereotypes levied against East Asian women and Black women appear to be on opposite ends of the spectrum, but this analysis will show how the stereotypes which writers in either ethnic group position themselves against overlap in unexpected ways. This will highlight, as Toni Morrison describes, the lack of depth attained if one approached this issue by only focusing on the hyperfeminized East Asian woman and hypermasculinized Black woman dichotomy. Further, this analysis will reveal the underlying reason why these inconsistencies persist without endangering the use of Blackness and East Asian features as metonyms, rather than mere signifiers of a broad cultural identities—that is, that racialized gender unconformity creates an unmappable third axis of gender for those who are not within the standard plane."
