Oak Bay has voted down yet another housing proposal 😞

As the applicant put it, “Uplands is not a museum… it is an early 20th century idea conceived in a cooler, much less crowded world.”

It’s time for choices that reflect today’s reality, not 1920’s nostalgia.

“Homes for All” is the theme of this year’s Gingerbread Showcase

Lots of great housing messages and examples of homes that should be legal everything

Different decade, same problem.

Back then, the “boogeyman” for local residents was townhouses; today, it’s towers.

I wonder how many of the people opposing the Quadra–McKenzie plan now are living in homes that were fiercely opposed in 1977.

Why! So disappointed in Colwood for denying 66 homes.

Colwood Corners is designated for high-density development according to the 2018 Official Community Plan.

What is the point of a community plan if everyone ignores it?

Saanich is hosting two in-person open houses on the updated Shelbourne Valley Plan, including important plans for new housing and stronger, more connected communities.

+ You can still have your voice heard on housing & community planning through the online survey 🙂

After another long night of Victoria’s OCP hearings, deliberations will resume Oct 2.

James Bay was well represented; with many speakers warning the neighbourhood is already too dense.

Are different areas in Greater Vic pulling their weight to get us out of the housing crisis? A member on our discord made an awesome visualization to help find out

We're pleased that after last night's vote, the draft Quadra-McKenzie Plan will now move forward to round 4 of public consultation.

However, we're concerned about the hostile reception many supporters of the plan, particularly young people, received from other members in the audience.

PROUD MOMENT ALERT! Our team was asked to present 3 recommendations to the BC Gov't Finance Committee, so we sent our finest (Jack Sandor)! As grass-roots housing advocates passionate about making homeownership accessible, we're honoured to have our voices heard at this level 🥹

Finally, we'll note that the more progressive option is often simpler + easier to administer. The proposed parking bylaw is complex, with reductions based on proximity to downtown, urban nodes, transit, unit size, and affordability.

Or you you could just end ALL parking mandates. 4/X

Moreover, the proposed TDM and cash-in-lieu options are half-measures. We don't want developers to overbuild free parking; why penalize providing less parking?

A better approach would be to only have parking maximums, and allow builders to reduce development fees by providing TDM measures.

Parking mandates are bad, period, no matter where you live. They make it cheap to drive and pass on the costs (via higher rents and pollution) to people who walk/bike/transit.

The list of cities that have abolished is long and getting longer every year! 2/x

FYI, parking reform is up on this week's COTW agenda in Victoria. Staff are proposing reducing parking minimums + a host of TDM measures that will enable builders to further reduce the amount of parking they need to build.

This is a positive step, but COV should just abolish parking minimums 1/x
