They’re not “in trouble”. They settled because it’s much cheaper than litigation. They didn’t even have to change anything with their product.

A settlement this low tells me Apple wanted to make this go away and the class action attorneys knew they didn’t have much of a case. Apple saved far more money by avoiding potentially years of litigation, and the class action attorneys at least got paid something.
