Managed a 12-hr conference day at #NWSA yesterday, so this little introvert earned a morning beach trip. Perhaps not the best in PR but a nice public beach only a mile via shuttle from conference hotel; even managed to walk back across the inlet bridges.

#NWSA begins tomorrow - grateful to have been able to come a few days early & walk around Old San Juan.

Now in conference center vortex which is the definition of post colonial: hotels, casino, entertainment mega plex, massive fountains in various states of repair. Would read that essay.

This week. We made it? Spoke at local teaching conference today on embodied writing - went really well! And couldn’t help notice AI wasn’t mentioned once in Qs & comments. Also won via raffle a book of poems I’d been interested in, so a good day. Shout out to everyone making our broken world work.

Not as historic, but my house, built in 1948, has a Saltillo (Mexican) kitchen floor tile with similar paw mark. I do love that’s it’s there.

The Riverwalk was in all its sunshine splendor - museum is across from the University of Tampa, whose main building is the historic Tampa Bay Hotel, once the end stop on the Henry B. Plant railway; famously a staging area for Teddy Roosevelt & the Rough Riders during Spanish-Am War.

Felt called to visit this exhibit in Tampa for Solstice weekend ☀️ A re-exhibition of works by Purvis Young, a Bahamian-American Miamian artist; paintings on scrap wood & found lumber, intended to be displayed with this mural effect and layering in places. At Tampa Museum of Art.

Morning filled with student AI case. Ugh. So went for a very humid, post T-storm walk & found a limpkin pair that frequents a park pond. They had a very young chick walking the water line & s/he perfectly blended into the cypress knees. Was a lovely moment. Close as I could get w/o disturbing them.

Appreciating some of the commentary on how U.S. media seems to be de-emphasizing Pope Leo XIV’s Peruvian connections… so allow me to share one of my favorite maps I include in my Humanities of the Americas course, a digital map created in 1990 by Jesse Levine: collections.lib.uwm.edu/digital/coll...

It does look like a beautiful day in Rome. ☀️ By coincidence I am wearing the sandals I wore for 5 weeks walking around the city a few years ago and it’s making more than a bit nostalgic. 🇮🇹

Some days the world sends us signs… found these at Fresh Market on way home from UCF WGS meeting - it’s the official International Women’s Day logo even. Prob good I didn’t know they were here earlier or I’d have bought them out for my classes.

We keep on keeping on - Advisory Board meeting of UCF Women’s & Gender Studies program. Had really grounding, uplifting conversation with their long-serving Arts & Humanities Dean. Grateful for reminders & perspective I needed to hear as the term ends.

Spotted this morning on my walk… Not the best photo as I didn’t want to creep on their porch, but appreciated this patio addition on a condo balcony. 🇲🇽 🇨🇦

Books I’ve bought since the new year 🌿 Spring Break reading. Really recommend the Contemplative Practices & Acts of Resistance in Higher Ed - the editors are having monthly webinars with contributors which have been nourishing (info on book website)

We’re reading Thoreau’s essay “Walking” in my Humanities intro class and since everyone is antsy ahead of Spring Break today we hit the campus trails- nice day, almost cool after heavy rains yesterday.

Sunday morning cyanotype workshop at the sweet yellow lakeside cottage affiliated with the Art & History Museum of Maitland. Especially liked using wallpaper strips as an experimental base. Gorgeous Spring day - so bright it was hard not to early expose the treated papers from all the sun ☀️
