I was so excited to see my book open for pre-orders on Barnes & Noble (members get 25% off)

It tells the fascinating story of a thriving Black community that was literally voted off the map in Jim Crow Texas, and how their neighbors got away with it.

Progress Denied: Quakertown, White Supremacy, and the Illusion of Democracy in Denton, Texas, 1850-1925|Hardcover
Sometimes, history isn’t what it appears to be. For instance, in the early 1920s, a thriving Southern Black community was literally voted out of existence by local white citizens. The North Texa...

In books: Born in 1897 in Louisiana to a mother from a free Black community and a father born into slavery, Audley “Queen Mother” Moore bore witness to the dying breaths of Reconstruction in the South. Then she became a vital part of the Black liberation movement.
The ‘Queen Mother’ of the Reparations Movement Gets Her Due
A UT-Austin historian tells the under-told story of Audley Moore, “one of the most important activists and theorists of the twentieth century.”

It's OK to stop pretending the Nobel Peace Prize has ever been relevant to people who care about peace, conflict resolution, and reconciliation.

Theodore Roosevelt - 1906
Elihu Root - 1912
Woodrow Wilson - 1919
Henry Kissinger - 1973
Barack Obama - 2009

War is war is war.
War is not peace.

New from Sam Judy: Attorneys and supporters of Raunaq Alam say his trial on a trumped-up charge was a classic example of a violation of First Amendment rights and a sign that Alam was being targeted for pro-Palestine activism. He's been arrested and sent back to jail 5 times since the case began.
Inside Tarrant County's Dogged Prosecution of a Pro-Palestine Activist
Raunaq Alam has been in and out of jail five times in relation to anti-Israel graffiti on a Christian church. His lawyer says the case shows "how easily the government can roll back all of our civil r...

Klansmen get a lot of attention when it comes to Jim Crow violence, but this lynching couldn't have happened without the cops, the doctor, and the nurse.
Work, Race, and the Crazy State of 1920s Fort Worth, Texas (Part 2)
Things were about to get worse for a middle-aged black strikebreaker named Fred Rouse. In December of 1921, the AMC union was on strike in the Fort Worth Stockyards. Fred had accepted work as a butcher while the white union members were out. Leaving work one day, he was "accosted" by two white brothers, Tom and Tracy Maclin. No one’s quite sure what they said to him, but whatever it was, he didn’t like it.

Graham Greene's brilliant performance in just 3 episodes of "Reservation Dogs" was touching, funny, painful, light-hearted, and tragic. He heartbreakingly acted out the continual cost of colonization and as well as some truly universal human struggles - a masterclass in communicating human dignity.
RIP Graham Greene. Every time he popped up on screen when I was a kid, my mom would excitedly point him out for being an actual Native on the screen. Able to be deadly serious and infinitely hilarious (even in smaller roles like Last of Us), he ate up the screen. Nʌki’wah brother.

Fort Worth calls itself “Where the West Begins,” but it’s also just about as Southern as any place can be. White supremacists in the city “often wore two hats: the ten-gallon variety as well as the white hood of the Invisible Empire [of the KKK],.” Here's part 1 of a story that proves just that.

Fort Worth calls itself “Where the West Begins,” but it’s also just about as Southern as any place can be. White supremacists in the city “often wore two hats: the ten-gallon variety as well as the white hood of the Invisible Empire ,” according to historian Neil Foley. Some say Texas isn’t really part of the South, but I agree with local historian Michael Phillips who said the southernness of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex “could be measured by the length of a hangman’s rope.” It doesn’t take too much digging to unearth those…

Teacher salary, working in the state capital with a BA and 1 year experience:

Sacramento, CA = $62,900
Albany, NY = $58,100
Oklahoma City, OK = $41,800

Even with accounting for cost of living, OK teachers still tend to be underpaid compared to their professional counterparts around the country.
Oklahoma will require teachers from NY, CA to prove they back 'America First'
Oklahoma's new "America First" teacher certification test will require educators from California and New York to agree with conservative curriculum.
