Early intervention is key! Today, September 11th, is apt to explain my thoughts; it’s like planes have crashed into the metaphorical Towers of the SEND and mental health systems. All the services are rushing up to the top- they’re passing casualties… 1/2

My muscles were tested carrying end of term gifts into school today. But it’s clear that such hydration is merited for the wonderful bunch of humans who have nurtured my orchid so well this year, despite his (much needed) EHCP being stuck in the system - 56 weeks since EHCNA request!

For SEND parents, the system is like being forever stuck in Minecraft survival mode. Creative mode- the place where you feel yourself- is a distant memory. You don’t dare dream anymore. The unlawful behaviour of LAs and the endless unknown waits break your spirit. Yet you keep going- you have to

These are wise words ❤️ Knowing the meaning of someone’s silence springs from relationship, connection and understanding!

You’re never too old for a poo joke when you’re a health visitor!

This is what DfE strive for by yr2. It looks to be the work of a masking ADHD girl with rife perfectionism! Such content then could have been my own. But hypermobility haulted my engrained perfectionism &over achieving tendencies (which hurtled me to cycles of burnout) from extending to handwriting

@mindtendencies2.bsky.social- I just came across these profound words of yours and love them! I wonder if at least one of the oxymorons will resonate personally with everyone that reads this quote? (In some way at least- if we’re listening to our thoughts honestly!)

I’ve just completed change of circumstance forms for DLA. Compiling the evidence bundle was a nightmare. In this day and age, why on earth is the DWP paper-based?! The SEND system could save a lot of money if it were more efficient!

This is helpful for understanding PDA!

This is a powerful point! I believe reward based approaches can also induce fawning and perfectionism

This post made me laugh as a SEND Mum and reflect on error as a professional ☺️

Disability isn’t linear; it’s unique, complex & dynamic. It can look like cancelling a school transport taxi at the last minute because a child perceives that the only way to get to school is riding 3 miles on a bike. Autism with PDA means you have to be flexible and go with their flow, when you can

Masking takes its toll. On the child and their family ❤️ The parents can feel like the crumpled ball but need to maintain the form of a swan to co-regulate. Kind words and compassion help to smooth some of the creases and take of a little of the load of appearing like the perfect swan!

Having an undiagnosed neurodivergent child feels like you’re surrounded by people telling you to puppy train a kitten! At 1st you don’t realise but the dog strategies leave your cat feeling scared (& put you at risk of being scratched!) You try to explain why the puppy strategies aren’t working 1/2

This quote is spot on! Understanding “can’t not won’t” is a game changer!

My achievement of the day was building a couple of scratching trees!! They were a hit!

My sensory seeker hit the pump track today for his high proprioception and dopamine hit.

Mini celebration post! It’s Week 33 and I’ve just had a decision to issue EHCP for my PDAer 🙌 It’s the first gateway we’ve not faced a battle at (I’m living in the moment and intentionally overlooking the fact that every step to the gateway and beyond it has or will be a fight 😝)

My high school kids are mad at me as I’ve just confessed to them that, on the odd occasion during covid (when no one had cash), I had to borrow money from their own piggy banks to pay their tooth fairy. It was a great opportunity to teach them about justice, fairness, morality and boundaries 😝

Monday morning giggles… when your teenager needs to make a cardboard replica of his home for school, be sure to choose the box wisely 😝

Took my neurodivergent child to the opticians today. The iPad stayed in the car but he could nibble on their free sweets in the waiting room. Yet yesterday he could have the iPad but no sweets whilst waiting for his dentist appointment! Social cues, quirks and etiquette truly are baffling!!
