I'm reasonably sure My Lai is still taught in all military officer accessions training/education, and I know the Law of Armed Conflict is taught and refreshed every year for active duty. This is more of a grey area as to applicable law but still illegal.

Yet military members are trained on and beholden to the Law of Armed Conflict every year. And are subject to the UCMJ. Additionally, the Rules of Engagement should be published somewhere, even if they're classified at the moment.

There should be legal teams at the top blocking any decisions like this that are legally questionable. Accountability sooner or later should follow.

The firing of many of the JAGs is a key component here. Hegseth dismissed the Army and Air Force's top uniformed lawyers, and the Pentagon solicited new JAGs for the Army, Navy, and Air Force, effectively removing their senior legal leadership. SOUTHCOM's commander resigned also.
