re-thinking some fundamentals seems to produce some better results. Rib and garter stitch seem to OK, but I'm still fiddling around with seed stitch combinations.

ah yes I see it! I think the lack of tension is always a factor, but the projection of the stitch ends was an attempt from me to simplify the number of mesh types I needed to use, and clearly not an appropriate simplification. Thank you!
