I don't think I understand your point. range(4) yields 4 numbers 0,1,2,3. Starting from 0 up to *but not including* 4.

I understand "go to" and "is less than" as synonymous.

It's not non-intuitive imo. There's no "standard" for loop there's only for var in iterator. So you can say for letter in word or for thing in list which is exactly how most novices want to use it. The best thing about range is that you can write for i in range(10) and it will do the thing 10 times.

The range function works as a less than condition so yields up to but not including the top number. It's a regular stumbling block for students.

Conventionally in Python all classes are defined with a capital. It gives the programmer a fast way to identify that you're dealing with a class.
