~from idea to reality~

a little nfc holder specifically designed for transit poles! idea is to make it easy to tap into local websites for hyperlocal info, conversations, etc. while waiting for the bus or walking around the neighborhood

i documented all the vacant storefronts in a 2x3 block of downtown oakland (combination of assessor's office data, google maps/search, and a lot of walking around)

still some cleaning to be done but learning a lot:

Chron's data is a bit out of date and doesn't include some other information so I went to the Assessor's Office myself and got the 2024 data... on a CD. For $20. And then went to a UPS to get the data off of it because who has a CD drive these days???

Anyway, new property owner data received.

SF Chron's map is partially helpful because it helps to identify who exactly owns these buildings (or at least did in 2021). At the very least, you start learning that a good number of the vacancies are owned by individuals and family trusts. Business addresses are there as well.

Whoever is doing construction in this part of downtown Oakland has been leaving their concrete blocks everywhere… so naturally, they’ve been reclaimed as graffiti galleries and bulletin boards. Not mad at it (though I would much rather the blocks be gone)
