cork (or caulk) boots have metal spikes on the bottom, which help foresters and loggers walk on/over areas like this with minimal (most of the time) injury.
A forest of grand and Douglas-fir with many stems on the ground or hung up on other trees. This mortality is primarily caused by root rot. Foresters describe this situation as a jacktrawed mess.

I saw my first bluebirds of 2025 yesterday. There‘s patchy snow on the ground, the grass is brown, and leaves are still hiding in their buds. Things have been a slog, but that flash of electric blue is hope on wings.
