"Do you think we can eat it?" Sonic asks, looking contemplatively at the zombie caught in their snare trap.

Shadow understands why he's asking. Their canned food has officially run out, they haven't eaten since yesterday, and he was really, really hoping to find something in one of their traps. A rabbit at least, if not a deer. On the other hand—

He takes his machete from its sheath and steps towards the zombie. It immediately starts thrashing in his direction, snarling and snapping its teeth. "We should kill it."

"Motherfucker." Shadow tears his wrist free with a snarl and swings the machete. It goes straight through the zombie's neck, its head flying clean off. Must have been dead a while.

"Can you just get over here and take care of this?"

Sonic rolls his eyes. He mutters something under his breath as he unsheathes his own machete, but obediently follows Shadow to a nearby tree. Shadow shoves his limiter bracelet higher up his arm, well above the bite, and lays his arm flat against the trunk.

"Ready?"

Shadow takes a deep breath, then grits his teeth. "Ready."

Sonic swings the machete; blinding pain shoots up Shadow's arm from the point of impact. His eyes water so much he can't see, but he knows it didn't go all the way through because Sonic does it again, causing another sharp burst of agony.

"Done," Sonic says, panting a little from the effort. He pets Shadow's head, a soothing gesture Shadow will never admit he appreciates. "You did well."

Shadow will accept that he did well at something when he doesn't have to have a limb cut off.

"Just," he grits out, "go hunt. I'll stay here while my arm regrows."

Sonic stares at him for a long moment, forehead creased with worry. Finally, he says, "If you're sure. See you in a bit."

He leans in to kiss him. Shadow shoves him away with the one hand that's still attached to his body, snarling. "Idiot. I'm infectious."

Sonic at least has the decency to look sheepish. "Right. Sorry. I always forget."

Shadow sighs. "Just get out of here."
