I think one of the most cowardly things you can do intellectually is play the “I’m half joking, half believing” card 🃏.

It’s a lazy “get out of jail free” whenever you want to make an outrageous wink-wink claim and selectively opt out of being committed to it.

A strong thinker is 100% committed.

Any American medium that fails to cover the largest protests in American history is failing in the basic mission of informing the public about the facts.

Yesterday's No Kings protests were apparently the largest since the first Earth Day in 1970

The NYT covered that story with a six column headline across the top of the paper and two full pages inside

Today, two small pics below the fold and a story on page A23

They constantly let America down

More people marched today than at any time in the history of the United States.

For @nytimes.com, it was the 6th most important story.

They are making sure that those in power do not see what they do not want to see.

This is not what we were brought up to think of as journalism.

The key to understanding how grievance politics (however shallow or deep) gets people to buy into stupid ideas:

Bad promises are easier to make than good ones.

Culturally, what’s lost are the best things in the world - because without objectivity, we can’t tell the best from the second, or the 75th best.

Politically, what’s lost is democracy. The logical terminus of “thinking it makes it so” politics is fascism. 3/3

“The president should be removed from office because he is plainly insane.”

I mean, there is no war in Portland. There just isn’t. You can’t & won’t avoid reporting this story. But you’ll still find a way to try to report it in a way that gives him the benefit of the doubt.

And that’s wrong.

I’m a climate scientist. Trump’s U.N. address is a fire hose of misinformation
OPINION: “What Trump is really doing is advancing a plan laid down years ago by plutocrats and polluters. And making a mockery of our country as he does so,” Michael E. Mann writes.

Trump utterly fails to call for violence to stop from BOTH sides (incredibly simple thing any responsible official would quickly say).

This is an implicit ENDORSEMENT of violence from the right (not to mention flippant comments that are more explicit).

Wildly irresponsible leadership.

The fact that “Can AI suffer?” (a risibly metaphysical question at this point) gets more traction than ongoing human welfare atrocities or animals welfare issues in the face of factory farming is an indictment of our culture.

See who benefits from that and why.

It should be deeply embarrassing to have made a move in the direction of authoritarianism in the name of individual rights.

Just one of myriad examples of the Trumpism grift.

You can entirely discount the “crime” narrative. It is bullshit. Domestic law enforcement is not a job for the military. Ordering the US military to do it is illegal, unamerican, and wrong.

That’s true even if the White House weren’t lying about crime, which they blatantly are, making things worse.
I don't think you can entirely discount the "crime" narrative, especially when governors are pushing back by arguing that crime is down so they're unnecessary (implicitly accepting the premise).

But I do think you need to foreground that Trump is ordering military occupations of US cities.

I created an MCP server for any LLM client for the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

With this tool, you can use your LLM of choice to ask question of and search the entire SEP! Really useful for getting a grip on a new issue or finding what to read next.

Attention algorithms love unsolvable problems that you are emotionally attached to.

Emotions keep you easily engaged. Solutions make engagement acyclic.

If the problem isn’t unsolvable to begin with, algorithmically driven content will strive to CONSTRUE IT AS unsolvable.

I’m making an optimistic call. I hope to look back at this years from now, in a safe world, and smile.

Trumpism will fail us. There is too much rationality in the rest of the world. Trump’s (and followers) immoral, egoist, and transactional view of human nature will be looked on darkly by history.
