There's also been a frenzy of activity around leasing in the Powder River Basin as well as the East Coast. But some great brains watching the markets explain how much coal is already locked up, what challenges persist: “I do not think there will be a rush to lease new reserves."

There's a LOT Of hype around the demand for energy re data centers. But Brendan Pierpont at Energy Innovation, said he long-term structural decline persists:

“These are older, less economic clunkers, essentially, and … it’s pretty clear that economics there are going to be a limiting factor.”

I asked GAO what happens with this report: "This decision does not take a position on the policy goals of the program. Changes to these policies and priorities can be addressed through the legislative process with Congress and the Administration."

GAO in recent testimony acknowledged that it has opened 39 impoundment investigations, and the report released Thursday marks the first decision in those probes.
