Oh you’re right—largest in the US then. But getting a major US manufacturer in & fully committed means more for the US market. There’s a lot more infrastructure already in place to leverage in marketing the team & sport domestically.

The teams are getting more money—reportedly $450mm. That’s a lot more than what was required under the existing Concorde, but it is still less than the $600mm arguably required under the new Concorde if Liberty dragged this out.

Everyone is a little unhappy, but F1 on the whole seems to win.

And Liberty gets what it wanted all along: a US automaker (largest in the world!) fully investing in F1.

To justify that investment GM will need to fully exploit the team, which means aggressively marketing it domestically.

And marketing the team necessarily markets F1.

The teams hated it too because they were going to collectively lose a lot more than $100mm in prize money.

So everyone waited it out long enough to force the Andretti family (Micahel) out. Mario gets a board seat out of respect & bc he brings value as an F1 champion.

But GM wasn’t fully committed.

Liberty hated that bc it didn’t do enough to push forward F1’s expansion in the US. GM has more reason & ability to market the sport as a whole through that brand than Andretti.

But without GM fully there? Andretti was just trying to drink Liberty’s milkshake.

Michael Andretti tried to make Liberty give him the US slot cheap, arbitraging the low $100mm dilution fee & the $1bb team validation to make a quick profit w/out the resources to guarantee the long-term financial & brand commitment that only GM (or another major automaker) could bring.

Re: 1, Toto has been angling at this for years. His Liberty-appeasing political choices in past years make a lot more sense with this goal in mind.

Re: 2, this lets Liberty put its house in order & gives it time to prep Domenicali out of the spotlight, before formally moving against MBS.

Unless they’re keeping him on ice somewhere while they get him ready to challenge Ben Sulayem next year. Bc Liberty is sick of that guy.
