“Interpretive Facts: Textualism, Empiricism, and the Law-Fact Divide” is now available on SSRN! The article will be published next spring/summer, so I have lots of time to incorporate suggestions. 😊

For instance: a smart woman director would have known better than to make Elizabeth into a spunky heroine type who banters with Victor. In the novel, Elizabeth is a woman warped by patriarchy into an angelic helpmate, and Victor both toxically reveres her and can’t stand her. More interesting, imo!
I’m only partway through, but Del Toro’s version is pretty disappointing so far, and I can’t help but think that it would have benefited from, uh, a woman’s touch (read: a robust understanding of pregnancy and childbirth as body horror)

Finally getting around to watching the new Frankenstein movie. I actually wrote my undergrad thesis on adaptations of Frankenstein, but somehow I’m only just now realizing: am I right that there’s never been a major film adaptation directed (perhaps even written?) by a woman?

(For the record, I was looking for a book called Legal Realisms by the scholar Christine Holbo. This isn’t rocket science!)

No spoilers but this really reminds me of something that happens in Cixin Liu’s Death’s End (the last volume of the Three Body Problem trilogy)
This study show that using poems to jailbreak LLMs is... super effective? What the heck.

It is wild. The NYT referred to it as an “irregularity” and like … it is indeed irregular, that’s a word for it
Sure. "The Grand Jury did not see the operative indictment" is the kind of fuckup where lawyers literally don't actually know what happens next because it SO fundamental a thing that it is LITERALLY possible nobody had even thought of this as a thing that could happen.

I had the delightful experience of teaching high school for about a year, which is how I know that 14-year-olds are kids, 15-year-olds are kids, 16-year-olds are kids, and 17-year-olds are kids. 18-year-olds? In my experience, usually kids

& it’s self-reinforcing. Believing that girls will never be capable of really contributing to human knowledge, culture, civilization means that it’s ok for your bros to use them as sex toys. Using girls as sex toys cuts off their opportunities to learn & grow & contribute to the world. Around we go.

I should stop—just one last thing. It makes total sense that a guy who believes women are cognitively inferior to men would be part of all this. The common factor is a total incuriosity about the inner lives of women and girls. This, too, is something Garcia notes among the Pelicot defendants
What resonates so grimly with the Epstein crimes is the way rape renders women and girls invisible. Even when the focus is on legal accountability for the men who rape, it’s *their* states of mind, their conspiracies, their infighting that takes up all the oxygen.

I’m glad that some of these emails are coming out and I hope people keep asking the White House about them.

At the same time, I just finished @manongarcia.bsky.social’s excellent Living With Men, about the Pelicot trial, and I have never had less hope that anyone will care 😔
