Philosophers: do have a strong, or mild, preference for reading papers when its one paper with that hang together at 14k-ish words, or two shorter papers that each have less in terms of a point but also are only 7-8k each?

Happy Mid-autumn harvest festival weekend! I made fusion mooncakes, cookie outside with a paste of dates and four kinds of nuts inside.

Metro Vancouver style energy snacks, because I absolutely have to finish this draft today.

A lovely moment shared with Ebeneezer Murderbeak on the walk in. They played with that mallard decoy! Pushing it around like a toy duck. And they coo'd at me! You can hear them make little cozy sounds if you listen closely. Definitely improved my day to be counted as birdfriend.

Oh summer garden drama. Stolen rhubarb-weird? but whatever. Then stolen tomatoes, which is pure sacrilege.

After 8 years w/out a single apple, our little tree did so well! Kids were proud. Till a bear sat on it and squashed the whole thing, trellis and tree.

Still a great garden year, though
The wreckage of an espaliered apple tree trellis, broken into pieces and pushed over, with trees branches through it. There are a lot of apples on the tree, still rather small and green but also delicious.

Bad news is I found a wasp nest. Good news is somehow it looks very cozy and homey? I kinda want to crawl inside with some tea and a blanket and book and take a nap?
A paper wasp nest hangs nestled in the fronds of a cedar tree, viewed from the same height as the nest. The surface of the nest is whorled and woody, like an old but well maintained wooden cabin on a stormy pacific beach.

Went for a long lovely walk this evening. He used to be so much smaller on evening walks on this trail! But also the trees used to be shorter, so. It gives pics of him here this kind of out-of-time character
A trail into a forest. The sides are dense with bushes, and small logs lay across the entry of the trail, which help you hop over the muddy bits during rainy season. Trees rise with eerie thin light grey trunks, and leaves only up at the top canopy layer. The back of a child is visible, walking up the inclined trail into the forest. Saw an exhibit of work by Håkon Gullvåg at this sprawling hilltop fortress in Halden, in one of the old storehouses. Teens were enthralled and terrified, they refused to be alone with it. This trio was my favourite, reminded me of The Twisted Ones by @tkingfisher.com
A painting about two meters by two meters, under visible timbered ceiling against white walls with two deep window alcoves, a meter or so deep. The painting has a black background and is of a game animal, maybe a reindeer? But kind of a skeleton of the animal, its face is like a skull. There are brishes of browns and dark oranges that dont seem directly representational but are somehow very horror esque. Same as other painting, a different animal, maybe a kind of deer, where the animal is part skeleton, or flesh is melting, or something. Hard to deacribe but the effect is unsettling. Another unsettling animal thst is mostly skeleton with flesh melting off.

One nice small moment a day for #pride month. Today, listening to these two read out loud in the hammock in the evening, I learned what chelicerae are

Pride month pic-a-day! Youngest told us last night that BTW he needs 10 crème brûlées for "french cafe" language class tomorrow. We improvised - 1 big dish, and 10 patches of burnt sugar that will surely be soggy by the time they eat it, but also serve as scooping guides for the kids. Phew! #pride

There are ten little patches of dark brown burnt sugar on top, with spaces in between, because trying to spoon through a full top of burnt sugar that spent the day in a fridge getting soggy would be a total mess for kids to try and serve.

The war zone in LA today is gutting me. Not surprised that this city has so many people standing up. I lived on and off in Socal; there will be no LA left if you let ICE work. Thank you for your bravery, I am so sorry it is this awful

Posting a nice moment each day for Pride month, and also, my Science and Values seminar took a field trip today! We went to Rudy Reimer/Yumks archaeology field school in Squamish. He showed around the area and gave us a lot of background knowledge about the area. Super interesting
