My kids growth can’t be paused so newer longitudinal studies like that one will loose their sample. If funding returns and the researchers haven’t jumped ship, they will need to start over from scratch. More established studies will need to conclude with insufficient data (holding back nerd rage).

The NIH isn’t the only funding source, but it is a big one. Not to mention one that is responsible for some of the largest scale research projects in the US. For example, my child is in the largest infant development study. Researchers have been following him since he was in utero.

There will be a whole generation of lost scientists. It doesn’t just impact those just graduating but those who are currently in graduate school working under grant funded faculty and prospective graduate students looking to join labs.
