Died #OTD 1642, Henry Montagu, 1st Earl of Manchester. MP from 1593 to 1614 and Lord High Treasurer 1620-1621. A renowned lawyer, he is best remembered as the judge that sentenced Sir Walter Raleigh to death in 1618.

Born #OTD 1941, Paul Tyler, Baron Tyler. In February 1974, he became the Liberal MP for Bodmin with a majority of 9 votes, one of the smallest in British history. He lost the seat at the October '74 election, and would later serve as the MP for North Cornwall from 1992 to 2005.

Born #OTD 1967, Oona King, Baroness King of Bow, Labour MP for Bethnal Green and Bow from 1997 to 2005. She was the second black woman elected to Parliament, after Diane Abbott in 1987.

Died #OTD 1687, Edmund Waller.

Serving as an MP since 1624, in 1643 Waller was involved in a royalist conspiracy to capture London known as ‘Waller’s Plot’. Although other conspirators were hanged, Waller bought his own stay of execution for £10,000.

Died #OTD 1723 Godfrey Kneller.

A leading portrait artist in the late Stuart and early Georgian era, in 1689 he was appointed (joint) Principal Painter in the royal household, a position he held until his death. His work included many famous Parliamentarians as you can see below:

Born #OTD 1890, Michael Collins, Irish revolutionary. Collins was elected to Parliament in 1918, but like other members of Sinn Féin, refused to take his seat. Instead they established an Irish Parliament (the Dáil) in Dublin and declared independence. 🧵 (1/3)

Born #OTD 1944, David Trimble, Baron Trimble, Ulster Unionist MP for Upper Bann from 1990 to 2005. A key figure in the negotiations that led to the Good Friday Agreement, ending the Troubles, he would serve as the inaugural First Minister of Northern Ireland from 1998 to 2002.

A pioneering scholar of parliament, Professor Rush's work on the social background of MPs and resulting Database stands as a fundamental source for generations of historians and political scientists.

Died #OTD 1811, Nathaniel Dance-Holland. Before entering Parliament, Dance-Holland was a founding member of the Royal Academy and successful portrait artist. He was commissioned to paint, among others, Lord North, Queen Charlotte and Captain James Cook.

Born #OTD 1554, Fulke Greville, 1st Baron Brooke.

MP for Guildford 1720-1727, then representing Surrey until 1761, Onslow holds the record for the longest-serving Speaker of the Commons, holding onto the seat for 33 years

Born #OTD 1739, Francis Russell, Marquess of Tavistock.

MP for Bedfordshire 1761-67, he previously sat in the Irish House of Commons for Armagh 1759-61. Although an MP until his death, he had a known 'detestation' for the House of Commons: 👇

Born #OTD 1886, A. V. Hill, Independent Conservative MP for Cambridge University, 1940-5. Before his political career, Hill was a physiologist, and in 1922 shared the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work on muscle physiology. He is the only MP to have won a Nobel Prize in the sciences.

Born #OTD 1717, Horace Walpole. Son of Robert Walpole, Britain's first Prime Minister, he was an MP from 1741-68 and in 1791 became 4th earl of Orford. He is well known for building Strawberry Hill House, and writing one of the first Gothic Novels.

Died #OTD 1549, Sir Anthony Denny.

MP for Ipswich and Hertfordshire, Denny became an intimate friend of Henry VIII. As groom of the chamber he attended the reception of Anne of Cleves, where the King confided to him his disappointment in the new Queen:

Died #OTD 1583, Sir Humphrey Gilbert, adventurer, explorer and MP for Plymouth in 1571 and later Queensborough in 1581.

He established the first English colony in North America at Newfoundland in 1583, but died when his ship sank on the return journey.

Died #OTD 1644, Sir John Coke.
