On the latest History of Vaccines blog, we take a look at the 1889 "Russian Flu" pandemic and its possible ties to a coronavirus more than a flu virus. Regardless of what caused it, it was the first global pandemic in the industrialized age.

This #NationalNursesWeek, we honor Isabel Zendal, the world’s first #publichealth nurse. In 1803, she cared for orphaned children who carried the smallpox vaccine across the ocean in history’s first global vaccination campaign.

The epidemic of Measles in Tx, NM, Ok., and Chih. (Mexico) continues. Updated data today from official sources. We obtained information from the ministry of health in Chihuahua, where measles cases are happening among the Mennonite community there. Over 500 cases total.

The 1989-1991 US measles epidemic led to a clinical trial in Los Angeles that tested the Edmonston-Zagreb (E-Z) vaccine on predominantly Black and Latino infants. However, the trial was marred by ethical lapses: https://buff.ly/41sdYRh

🦠 Smallpox was humanity's deadliest enemy. Last century, it killed between 300-500 million people. As late as 1967, it infected 15 million and killed 2 million annually. With vaccination, smallpox became the first human disease eradicated.
