141 episodes in, and I think this city has remained loyal to its current rulers during a war exactly 1 time.

That brought an end to the struggle for power, and Darius was secure on his throne. His reign would see the first widespread wave of rebellions against Persia in over a century, and the successful reconquest of territory lost to Athens a generation earlier.

That made Artyphius the third man in his family defeated in a rebellion, but he was spared to convince Arsites that his brother would show leniency. When Arsites surrendered, Parysatis convinced Darius to have both rebels executed with ash pits.

Syria was bordered on three sides by Darius' core supporters: Egypt, Armenia, and Babylonia. It was also sparsely populated and relied on Greek mercenaries to fill out their ranks. So Darius' general Artasyrus just offered the mercenaries more money to switch sides, and they captured Artyphius too.

Most of Darius' siblings mysteriously vanish from history, and execution is the most likely explanation. Possibly fearing the same result, his full-brother Arsites rebelled in Syria with the aid of the veteran rebel Artyphius. They actually won the first two battles, but Syrian rebels were old news.

\pact, with each of their eldest sons marrying the other's eldest daughter. After the influential advisor Bagorazus was executed by Sogdianus on flimsy pretext, a Persian cavalry officer named Arbarius switched sides, and Sogdianus was convinced to meet with his brother for negotiations.

\being a core member of Sogdianus' court. We know very little about Sogdianus' other supporters, as his power was apparently rooted in the poorly documented eastern provinces. Darius had the support of Arsames, the Satrap of Egypt and another major patron of Babylonian elites and offered a marriage/

At the same time, another half-brother, Ochus, had just been declared King Darius II in Babylon. Darius and his wife (also a half-sister), Parysatis, were longtime patrons of the Babylonian elite and received significant support there. This was in spite of Menostanes, son of the Babylonian satrap/

Ctesias, a Greek physician who wound up living in the Persian royal court near the end of Darius' life, described how the legitimate successor, Xerxes II, was only able to hold power for 45 days before one of his half brothers, Sogdianus, staged a military coup and killed Xerxes. They weren't alone.
