Here’s envelope of a letter (dated Dec 29, 1941) that my father wrote to his girlfriend, who would later become my mother. My father was in training at the US Army Signal School in NJ. The letter is addressed to Fleischer Studios, where they met. Fleischer made Betty Boop and Popeye cartoons.

OK, if you know me, you know I’m a history nerd. So I found this very interesting article from the Atlanta newspaper, Feb 25, 1942. I tend to think that blackout drills only happened overseas during WWII. But a blackout drill happened here close to where I live now in the Atlanta area.

How often does someone get a chance to read a parent’s intimate and emotional thoughts when that person was a young adult? My son is transcribing over 200 letters written by my father (and a few by my mother) from 1941-44.

In research for a WWII novel I’m writing I found this little V- Mail letter written by my father to his mother. He is mostly asking his mother to buy some gifts for his girlfriend’s birthday back home (my mother eventually). I didn’t know V-Mail letters were so tiny!

Here's a little video my son made to promote my book: The Writing on the Walls: Discovering Medieval and Ancient Graffiti for Middle School Social Studies (Unfortunately out of print, but I own the copyright, and I'm looking for a new publisher!)

These are Native Australian objects my father brought home during WWII. I’m trying to find a home for them.
