I’ve spent the majority of the week in Perth. Beautiful weather and beautiful place. Equally wonderful was the @museumbw and the staff there. Super helpful and knowledgeable. I got a lot of great material for my book.

In the early hours, #OTD in 1940, 2/Lt Alan Orr Ewing of 1st Btn Black Watch, led a patrol in the woods east of Remeling in NE France. There was a firefight with German troops. No British casualties were reported.

On this day in 1940, the entirety of 51st Highland Division relieved the French at the Hombourg-Budange section of the Maginot line. Including the recently arrived 7 Norfolks.

In one account of the fighting in the Saar, May 1940, an officer 2/Lt Alan Orr Ewing describes using a Beretta. In the context it’s likely more than a pistol. Does anyone know if it’s simply slang or whether it was privately purchased by Orr Ewing?

On this day in 1940, the remainder of 51st Highland Division arrived at the Maginot line, north of Metz. They were there to gain combat experience under French Command. It was the start of a fateful journey. IWM

Had a great time at Kent Battle of Britain Museum this morning. The museum makes the connection between the machines and the pilots’ stories in an incredibly effective way. It was a very moving experience.

Few days away with the family, walked along the beach at Dungeness this morning. Lovely day for it!

This is the seaside town of Ault on the French Picardy coast. Maj Lorne Campbell and two companies from 8th Btn Argyll & Sutherlands were dug in around the lighthouse on 5th June 1940. Surrounded by Germans, Campbell led his men on two night marches back to British lines along the Bresle River.

It’s been a long and emotional day at St Valery. But I’ve got so much from the experience that will hopefully translate to the page. It must have felt like being stuck in a cooking pot, especially on the night of 11th June.

First go at a then and now, as I’m in St Valery-en-caux today. Famous photo of General Victor Fortune standing with Rommel in the harbour area of St Valery following the 51st Highland Division surrender on 12th June 1940. I couldn’t get quite the correct angle due to an inconvenient road.

Another good day yesterday. One place I visited was Huchenneville. 4th Cameron Highlanders had their HQ here, in the Chateau, on 4th June 1940. Also looked down towards Hedgehog Wood, which was a key objective for the Cameron’s during the attack on Abbeville. Brave men to walk across open ground.

The van has proved very handy for this research trip. Having lunch next to battle sites has been an interesting experience.

Had a good day in and around Abbeville yesterday. Very moving visit to Abbeville Communal Cemetery and the cemetery at Mareuil-Caubert. Many British and Commonwealth graves from both wars. I was struck by the number of unidentified soldiers.

France has been sighted. Much more luxurious trip than the soldiers I’m going to research.

I’m going to Abbeville and St Valery-en-Caux in March for research purposes. Very excited. Has anyone got any tips for preparing and making the most of a walking the ground trip?

Fruitful research trip to IWM today. Some interesting accounts, mostly from men taken prisoner at St Valery and thus written in captivity. 2Lt Reg Wood, 1Bn Kensingtons, left a particularly detailed account.

During my France 1940 research I’ve read things that trash the performance of the Fairey Battle. Anyone got an alternative perspective?
