#beebit "Move Jessica, I gotta poop!" In winter, when the weather warms to around 45, bees leave their hives to poop. We call these "cleansing flights." Bees hold off defecating for months when it's too cold to fly. Extra #beebit, their feces are a yellowish semi-liquid that smells like honey:)

You can really only appreciate the phenomenon that is the orange cat by having one. I was actually ignorant of all things orange cat but now I know.

A Sunday morning #beebit. Did you know that a queen honey bee can live for up to 5 years? That's a long life for a bug! Most have a 1-2 year lifespan though. My longest lived queen was Flo. She lived for 3.5 years before her colony superseded (overthrew) her. Bees are cool!

With turkey day approaching, this is how I like my bird...not cooked, but chasing my wife down our driveway every morning! This is Bailey, he has a huge crush on her and he lets her know it by purring, cutting, and clucking at her every chance he gets.

Not nearly as exciting a location, but old fashioned in Ames, Iowa:) I think I need a refill.

First #beebit! We got a dusting of snow today in central Iowa so winter is coming. In winter, even with temps well below zero, bees keep the interior of a beehive at a toasty 95 degrees. They cluster tightly to keep warm. They even start to rear spring bees in the dead of winter. Bees are neat!

I did academic smartypants stuff on that other app. I'm gonna use Bluesky for that but also what I hope is fun stuff, like beekeeping, my hobby/side hustle. Bees are amazing creatures and I've learned a lot, so I'ma try to hit ya'll with a #beebit every somoften! First edition coming soon:)

Hi, I'm Brian. I'm new here. For those who don't know me, I write history, keep bees, and I'm a fierce, fierce friend. Oh, and I like tacos. Check out my latest book, uncpress.org/book/9781469.... And here I be up on a ladder rescuing an open air colony of bees.
