Brewing history isn't just a UK or European thing by any means, and this excellent talk from Douglas Hoverson lifts the lid on early American marketing!

The international expositions of the late 19th and early 20th centuries celebrated the agricultural and industrial might of nations. Visitors anticipated seeing the newest marvels of the age, but also needed refreshment. The brewing industry satisfied both desires by creating lavish displays touting their technical prowess and by providing beer for thirsty patrons at elaborate restaurants and beer stands. Industry groups scheduled conferences to coincide with the expositions, but the breweries were generally more interested in awards and markets than science and technology, which was transferred more effectively by other means. Breweries outside of Europe used accolades earned at competitions to prove their quality was every bit as good as breweries of the Old World. This presentation will focus on the marketing of beer and brewing technology at World’s Fairs and how experiences at the expositions were used to market beer in America.

Andrew Davison of Historic England and CAMRA fame will be giving an incredibly interesting talk that we can't tell you about just yet!

Andrew Davison works for Historic England. He is co-author (with the late Geoff Brandwood and Michael Slaughter) of ‘Licensed to sell: the history and heritage of the public house”, published by English Heritage in 2004, with a revised edition in 2011. It was whilst researching for that book that he first became aware of the influence the Temperance movement (the anti-alcohol campaign of the later C19 and early C20) had upon public house design in this country. He has also published papers on the Temperance movement’s own buildings. He lives in West Yorkshire.

Crisp Malt's Mike Benson, Sales Manager for Brewing in Wales, the West and Scotland. Mike is a hugely experienced brewer who has been there and done that in all things brewing and packaging.

We promised you another speaker announcement this week, and what an announcement we've got!

We've only gone and got writer and journalist Laura Hadland (@morrighani.bsky.social)!
Laura Hadland stepped away from a successful career as Senior Curator for a large local authority museum service to become a full time writer in 2017. She writes regular columns for CAMRA’s What’s Brewing and Vineyard Magazine and her first book, 50 Years of CAMRA, was named the Best Beer Book in the World 2022. Laura’s work often uses historical insight into beer, pubs and brewing to highlight their contemporary relevance. Laura lives in Shropshire with her family and two geriatric cats. We've only gone and got Pete Brown!
Pete Brown is a British author, journalist, broadcaster and consultant specialising in food and drink and the culture that surrounds them. He writes for newspapers and magazines around the world and is a regular contributor to radio and podcasts. He was named British Beer Writer of the Year in 2009, 2012, 2016 and 2021, has won three Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink Awards, been shortlisted twice for the Andre Simon Awards, and in 2020 was named an “Industry Legend” at the Imbibe Hospitality Awards. He was recently accused of being the 31st most important person in the drinks industry. Twice

We've not just got great speakers we're lining up, but we have the incredibly talented and wonderful Emma Inch running the show on the days!

We really couldn't ask for a better host!
Emma Inch is a multi-award-winning freelance writer and audio-maker, and former British Beer Writer of the Year. She has written for several national and international publications and produces creative audio for the drinks trade. Her most recent podcast, Same Again?, explores the complex relationships between beer, pubs and mental health. Emma is also a prize-winning homebrewer and obtained her General Certificate in Brewing from the Institute of Brewing & Distilling. As such, she has a keen interest in both the technical and the social sides of brewing. Born in Greater Manchester, Emma now lives in the sunny south coast city of Brighton. We've got Gary Gillman!
Gary Gillman, based in Toronto, Canada, writes full-time on beer, mainly historical aspects. He established the blog Beer et Seq (www.beeretseq.com) in 2015 following a successful legal career, but has followed beer and brewing closely for decades. His site currently comprises 1,800 posts on a wide variety of topics with a focus on North America and the UK. Gary presents at conferences, contributes to scholarly journals and magazines, and judges beer.

We are absolutely stoked that Lars Garshol is going to be giving a talk at our conference this year.
He's almost single-handedly brought historical farmhouse brewing to greater recognition and is arguably responsible for so many brewers worldwide being aware of and now using Kveik yeast.
Lars Marius Garshol used to be a software engineer, but he gave that up to work full-time on researching and writing about traditional farmhouse brewing. He's spent the last decade researching farmhouse brewing throughout northern Europe. He is the author of Larsblog, a blog devoted to sharing his discoveries and travels, Historical Brewing Techniques: The Lost Art of Farmhouse Brewing, and a book on Lithuanian beer. He lives with his wife and daughter in Rælingen, Norway.

It's none other than the amazing Fairfield Social Club!

Their new site has two halls with a huge beer garden in between. And it's right in the city centre of Manchester!
