Historic Southampton

I’m Russell and local history is my hobby.
My great-great-grandfather, a Southampton seafarer, worked on ships bringing US troops to Britain during the First World War. In 1917 they were attacked by a U-boat and a torpedo glanced off their hull. They then collided with the U-boat but thankfully they managed to limp to port.

Over 3,200 local men and women are now remembered on the Southampton Cenotaph, which was unveiled in November 1920.
Thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by war today on Remembrance Sunday.

Tens of thousands of sick and wounded were taken by train from Southampton Docks, where they had arrived on hospital ships, to the Royal Victoria Hospital at Netley, a journey of only a few miles.

Thousands of nurses also passed through the port. So many of those who left Southampton would never return and now lie in ‘some corner of a foreign field’. Over a million men came back to Southampton wounded or dying, and so many more returned forever changed by the horrors of war.

In 1910 he handed out this wonderful little postcard, which presumably he typed up himself, expressing his dissatisfaction with the state of the country. He clearly blamed David Lloyd George who was, at that time, Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Incidentally, much later, this establishment (renamed as the King Alfred) would become familiar to Saints fans due to its close proximity to St Mary’s Stadium. Bill Rawlings died in Chandler’s Ford in 1972 at the age of 76.

Rawlings moved to First Division Manchester United in 1928. When his football career came to an end, he went to work as a civil servant for the Admiralty. After retiring from this job, Rawlings ran the Glebe Hotel on Northam Road in Southampton.

If you were stood roughly in the same spot today facing the same way, you’d have the Mountbatten Retail Park on your right and the old Toys “R” Us building ahead.
