Thanks for passing along this recipe! I will have to try it out soon. Shockingly, our 2 year old loves lentils, and I adore Smitten Kitchen recipes. I don't know if a veg alternative would work for it, but her white ragu with ground pork is one of my favorite foods.

Perhaps most surprising, though, was that the book that they seemed to enjoy the most and would refer back to the most in discussions (more than the graphic novel assigned, even) was Katja Hoyer's Blood and Iron. Who knew Bismarck would make such an impression on college students today?

Although intended for slightly younger readers, E.H. Gombrich's classic A Little History of the World might be nice for them, depending on their prior knowledge. My college students have responded well to Lynn Wood Mollenauer's Strange Revelations: Magic, Poison, and Sacrilege in Louis XIV's France
