Irrelevant in what sense? That a major player in the international order is beset by political instability (again) is not deemed news worthy? Or is it that news outside specific locations has now been designated as unimportant? A destabilised Japan has severe international consequences.

No Charles III could not dissolve parliament. Constitutionally the monarch can only do that only on the advice of ministers. If any monarch decided on their own to dissolve parliament — that’s a coup.

At school in the 80s when it started on UK tv. Friends all chose good / popular teams. I chose Vikes because a) they played in purple, b) it’s a seriously cool name! C) they weren’t very good — so thought they could do with extra help! Never regretted it! (More post reg season wins would be nice…)

i suppose inarticulacy I was arguing that the UK overestimates the soft power of the monarchy post QE2. It exists I agree in most monarchies (Japan less so) but that other European ones have realised its limitations internationally. There is less lustre & appeal post QE2. How will UK recalibrate..?

I think the UK has failed to grasp that as an international tool of soft power, since the death of QE2 the institution no longer has the same influence. It’s natural after such a long reign, but KC3 & William don’t have the same levers of soft power as QE2. The next few years will be fascinating.
