In his recent public appearance, speaking about his new book Grandeza, former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador stated that there were no human sacrifices or anthropophagy in Mesoamerica, attributing this belief to a 'Black Legend' invented by the Spaniards.

Neither Black Legend nor Pink: Ixiptla, Theophagy, and the Bones That Do Not Lie In his recent public appearance, discussing his new book Grandeza, former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador stated that there were no human sacrifices or anthropophagy in Mesoamerica, attributing this belief to a 'Black Legend' invented by the Spaniards. But bones do not lie: excavations at the Huey Tzompantli, osteological studies by Ximena Chávez Balderas, and findings in Tecoaque show that sacrifice and theophagy were central practices in the worldview not only of the Mexica, but of Mesoamerica. Furthermore, a comparison with the Incas reveals that human sacrifice was also a mechanism of power in the Andes through the capacocha, where children and maidens were offered to the Sun and the sacred mountains. In both cases, blood legitimized central power and sustained the cosmos. This lovely colloquium is coming up soon. I will be participating with my paper titled: 'The Best-Selling Saint: Consumption and Legitimization of the Cult of St. Jude Thaddeus at the Church of San Hipólito (1950-2000).'

My paper will examine religion as a historical object in explicit dialogue with marketing and consumption studies. Drawing on the concept of the 'symbolic commodity,' I will study the spectacular and massive devotion that St. Jude Thaddeus has achieved within the Church of San Hipólito in Mexico City. I aim to examine how the sacred transforms into a high-consumption cultural product that is appropriated, sold, and circulated. I will focus on the period covering the massification of the cult starting in 1950 and its consolidation following the milestone of 1982, when the effigy of St. Jude was moved to the high altar. This relocation will be analyzed as an act of institutional legitimation, comparable to the positioning of a flagship product in the religious market, granting St. Jude a devotional competitive advantage over other figures. I will investigate how the cult shifted from a peripheral practice to a 'brand' that demands loyalty from 'consumers' (parishioners), and involves intense economic circulation visible in devotional objects (souvenirs, votive candles). The objective is to build methodological bridges between history and marketing, offering analytical tools to understand how this devotion to 'desperate causes' not only segmented a market of emotional need but evolved into a social and economic phenomenon that is managed and consumed in contemporary Mexico.

Based on the novel Dellamorte Dellamore, Cemetery Man is one of the most fun and extravagant films you can find. It could have been a "piece of trash," but it became a great work. Not suitable for everyone.
