Ganymedes is a yearly collection of Dutch fantastic tales: this is the 25th year, featuring 30 stories.
I also got their magazine with more stories, and they threw in a free book featuring interviews with Dutch writers! 😄🖤

Going to start with @travisbaldree.bsky.social's new book before reading @maryrobinettekowal.com's novel.
I don't have any pastries at hand yet but have a feeling they will be needed soon 🤗

Another haiku for the theme #strange. I admit it builds more on my other haiku of today than the theme itself.

Meanwhile our country (which conveniently is in large part below sea level) is heading straight towards one of the more dystopian futures described by my fellow Dutch sci-fi writers.
Clogpunk here we come!

Now onto the EdgeZero 2024 anthology of Dutch short stories. I read the first three stories and so far I'm having a blast! 🖤

Rather than a defeat it feels as if it opens up possibilities. To quote that one Magic the Gathering card: "When nothing remains, everything is equally possible."

So today I went out and bought the only English language scifi book I could find in this city that I hadn't read yet: Katabasis by R. F. Kuang😊

Love the way the writer's name is spelled, in a combination of 한글 and Latin script (the first 6 syllables on the second line) 🖤
And book awards are stylized with dots above them: Hugo & Nebula! 🤩

What stunned me most in this book weren't the fantastical encounters. It was the main character not having encountered tea yet, sailing the 12th century Arab waters 🤯
17/17 would recommend the book!

The story:
- Modern setting
- Unintended side effects of a magic spell that actually works
- White supremacist nationalists being butthurt
- 12th century feminist 'witches'

On vacation in Belgium right now, checking out old libraries in the Printing Press museum in Antwerp 🖤
When I get back i'll do more editing on my 1st story before sending it off to sensitivity readers. Anybody have connections in Botswana?🤔

-Read 'Heart of Darkness' (1899) by J. Conrad,
-Then watch 'Apocalypse Now' (1979) by F. F. Coppola,
-Then read 'Shatterpoint' (2003) by M. W. Stover.
It's difficult to describe how good (and horrific) these pieces of media are. How they build upon and strengthen each other.
