Women, it should be noted, have dominated the teaching profession since the nineteenth century not because it’s a misandrist job-protection racket but because early public-education advocates found that they could expand the school system more quickly by hiring women teachers, whom they could pay less than men. One might ask if difficult, essential work might be well paid, at this moment in history, regardless of a person’s sex. But then much of the centrist manosphere’s rhetoric is predicated on refusing to see half of what’s in front of you.

Your job as an organizer was to find out what it was that people wanted to be different in their lives, and then to persuade people that it mattered whether they decided to do something about it. This is not the same thing as persuading people that the thing itself matters: they usually know it does. The task is to persuade people that they matter: they know they usually don’t.

I think a common fundamental misunderstanding of Marxism is that Marx advocated for a working class revolution because the working class were the most oppressed people. That misunderstanding then leads to an idea that "Well that was then, this is now," and that we should consequently focus primarily on the most marginalized and oppressed populations. Certainly ignoring those populations is not an option, and was one of the gravest mistakes of early socialism, but that's actually not what Marx's point was. Marx advocated for a working class revolution because he understood that in a capitalist society that it was the working class more than any other group that held the ability to overthrow capitalism. This potential came from their relationship to the means of production - the capitalist economy would not stop if capitalists stopped working or if the lumpenproletariat (a Marxist term for people like drug dealers, the unemployed, other criminalized populations) stopped working, it can only be shut down by the mass action of the working class. That is what we mean when some of us say class, the division of labor, is the primary contradiction. We're not saying that class-based exploitation and oppression is better or worse than oppression based on other characteristics. Like if revolutions just happened by organizing only the most oppressed people, I probably would not talk to another cisgender person ever again lol. But only the working class is a group with a common interest that under capitalism is necessarily a majority and ever growing part of the population. The various "developments" of Marxism, offering alternative populations like the lumpenproletariat or subsistence farmers as revolutionary populations, are all fading into impossibility as the world is now majority urban and majority working class. Marx was not perfect, but on this he was absolutely right, and understanding this primacy of class is crucial if we ever hope to win socialism in our time.

different types of eyewear protection, ranked: no eyewear at all cons: you are not protected from anything pros: it's free, and you can get it at home. we all gotta work with what we got. sunglasses: pros: cheap, plentiful. helps against being identified in surveillance photos cons: not much protection otherwise. safety glasses: pros: definitely better than nothing, helps with flying debris. maybe you have some leftover from chem or bio lab cons: not much good vs rubber bullets. plus you look like a big dork ballistic-rated safety glasses: pros: this will stop a rubber bullet shot directly into your eye, saving your entire eyeball. invaluable protection for ~$10-15. cons: typically only sold in tacticool military gear stores. if you buy it online it might not get here for weeks. you will 100% look like a conservative truck dad. regular safety glasses are rated "ANSI Z87.1." this is equivalent to a projectile travelling at 150 feet per second or 45 meters per second. ballistic glasses will have one of the following ratings, you need to see one of these codes to know the glasses are worthwhile: MIL-PRF-31013, MIL-V-43511C, or MCEPS GL-PD 10-12. these meet standards equivalent to ~620 feet per second or 190 meters per second. these codes arent printed or stamped on the glasses anywhere and there isnt a universal symbol in use like the green triangle patch for csa approved safety boots or the like. you have to check the packaging and see if those standards are advertised, they should be prominent. for people that already wear glasses, you can get ballistic "over-specs" or "over glasses."
