Medieval logicians distinguish between kullī, juz’ī, and shakhṣī—that is, between universalis, particularis, and singularis. The Kantian table of categories is derived precisely from this table of judgments.

Translations of Aristotle's works are often inconsistent and all over the place, but Aristotle does distinguish between that which is καθόλου (universal), that which is κατὰ μέρος (particular), and that which is καθ’ ἕκαστον (singular).

The threefold distinction is easily maintained in logic, where the universal statement "All men are white" clearly differs from both the particular statement "Some men are white" and the singular statement "Socrates is white." But maintaining this distinction in ontology is much more difficult.
