In metallurgical analyses, signs of plastic deformation and failures in the connections between beams and columns were identified. There were a number of factors involved.

Consider that temperatures reached 1000°C where the loss is 90% and the lower floors between 600° and 1000° where the loss is 50%. As the upper floors collapsed, they exerted immense dynamic forces on the lower floors, leading to a "pancake" effect.

Basically like high fire temperatures. Structural steel loses about 50% of its tensile strength at 600°C and up to 90% at 1,000°C.
