It's vestigal, from MP1 not having Morph Ball jump. It got added in the Wii version with motion controls, but wasn't added to the series proper until MP3. So it makes sense the first original non Wii game to have it would have button issues.

The N64's popularity was localized. Globally the Playstation crushed it, but in North America for example, it only outsold it 2:1. compared to Japan for example where it outsold it 4:1 or Europe where it was 10:1. So it's pretty clear why in some circles the N64 didn't feel like such a flop.

I was similarly lost for words when I was trying to compare the idea of Sonic Adventure 2 getting a live action movie made.
Like I can't think of anything as ridiculous as SA2 getting an adaptation.
