This episode, like most of Star Trek, is available on DVD, Blu-Ray, digital download, and streaming on Paramount+. But I CANNOT recommend the Blu-Ray season enough as it contains an extended version of this episode equally restored alongside the original episode.

This episode is a critical darling, but also a personal favorite because we see how quickly Picard is informed of the fallacy and springs to Data's defense. I believe sci-fi is a unique lens to look at current issues in a new frame, and this was a formulative episode to my own empathy

Initially, Picard tries to encourage Data to go along with the disassembly being asked of him. However, he quickly changes his tune when Data points out the logical fallacy of asking this of him as opposed to what other crew members can choose to do. Picard springs to his defense from there on.

Picard needs to prove that Data is a sentient being of his own autonomy and not the property of the Federation.
Largely a court-drama, the idea is that the Federation wants to study Data in pursuit of creating a new form of labor.

The biggest difference is that Kirk is NOT the captain of the Enterprise but Pike still is, and his methods lead to a very different future despite him always advocating for a peaceful resolution. Certain phrases, actions, and situations are directly lifted from the original episode
