First tangible signs of the impact of Trump's absurd "liberation day" tariffs on #Cambodia?

Export/Import numbers out today for May.

Garment exports up 30% on May 2024, while total exports to the US up a massive 42%. Seems indicative of bringing forward orders to beat the tariffs.

#Cambodia has a tourism problem!

I was in Siem Reap on the weekend, and was surprised at how quiet it was. Despite having one of the most extraordinary monuments in the world in Angkor Wat, tourists just aren't coming. Businesses are hurting. Yes it is low season, but the numbers are still grim.

#China sovereign loan agreements signed with #Cambodia:
2022 - $567m
2023 - $302m
2024 - $0
Q1 2025 - $0

Quite a remarkable drop off in support.

The red flags on this are far too numerous to detail here. Suffice to say, would be good for the Cambodian SERC to take a good look at it!

The IMF has reduced their 2025 GDP growth forecast for Cambodia from 5.8% to 4.0%, due to softer global conditions (aka Trumponomics).

has Phnom Penh just lost power across the city?

US to impose 3,521% [sic] tariff on Cambodia solar exports. Clearly that rules out any solar exports to the US, although we don't expect that to have a material impact on Cambodia's economy given our long standing doubts about the value add that was happening with those exports.
US finalizes tariffs on Southeast Asian solar imports
U.S. trade officials finalized tariff levels on solar cells and panels from Southeast Asia, a key step toward wrapping up a year-old trade case brought by American manufacturers that accuse their overseas rivals of flooding the market with unfairly cheap goods.

Xi Jinping Visit to #Cambodia

Just back from leave and catching up on the news. Did the #Chinese offer anything of substance during the visit to Cambodia?

A quick glance of the news suggests not, which seems a big missed opportunity, but wondering if i'm missing something.

Does the Khmer Times not know who the AfD is?

I'm not sure this is who you want endorsements from.....

I would argue that #Cambodia's public debt, which is one of the lowest globally for an emerging economy, is too low. While it can access concessional funding for the next 5 or so years, it should be borrowing more to support the country's development.

#Cambodia is on this list of proposed travel bans circulating within the US govt. Not clear why, but definitely not a positive.

#Cambodia's 2024 Public Debt bulletin out today - continues to show public debt extremely low, with a very conservative risk profile, and exceptionally low debt servicing costs. Also of note is no new loans signed with China for the entire year (unusual!).

Yes, this administration is dangerous and cruel, but they are also shockingly dim and incompetent.

Opportunities are everywhere.

Make everything as hard as possible. Resist every demand. Refuse entry without a warrant. Don’t take the buyout. Their problem solving skills are 📉

I know i'm not the first to point it out, but it's remarkable how much the Trump administration and associated hangers-on resembles the Catina scene from Star Wars. What an extraordinary bunch of grifters, weirdos, crooks, misfits etc.

#Cambodia tourist arrivals in November best since pre-covid. Ex-Chinese tourists, numbers down just 11% on pre-covid levels, compared to ~30% for most of 2024. Siem Reap still down 44% on total arrivals, but much better than -67% year to date average

Latest #Cambodia public debt bulletin for Q3/2024 out today. Cambodia continues to have extremely low levels of public debt (arguably too low). What is interesting is that no new loans signed with China so far in 2024. Very unusual. Is that a demand or a supply problem?

#Cambodia exports continuing to boom in first 11 months, with Garments up 26%, and overall exports (ex solar) up 26% as well. Augurs well for 2024 GDP figures. Vehicle imports in November highest since 2022, suggesting domestic demand is picking up as well.
