HIFMB develops the scientific basis for marine conservation & ecosystem management by analysing the functional role of biodiversity in marine ecosystems.
De Luca studies how DNA gets damaged and why some regions are more vulnerable. Her team developed a tagging method to track DNA damage in individual cells, which could improve cancer treatments and reveal how DNA changes over time. She's also using it to study coral DNA and their long-term survival.

At Helmholtz, POF stands for Programme-Oriented Funding, a strategic, long-term funding mechanism that supports cross-center research programs rather than individual institutions.
