tiny snippet for the tail end of wip wednesday

“You’ll have to mind her gait, when she’s a little older,” Viktor said.

“What for?”

Viktor hesitated, just for a moment. “My leg,” he said. “My mother said I had problems with it from the time I began walking, but there was no way of knowing if it was due to genetics or if I just happened to develop that way. In any case, had it been corrected when I was a child—”

“It’s a little early to be talking about that,” Jayce said.

“Not really.”

He did this now and then: unexpectedly reminded Jayce of some matter or other that he didn’t expect to be around to attend to himself. It caught Jayce off guard every time, like a blow to the face.

wip wednesday

“He needs me,” Jayce said, his voice strangled. Alexandra needed him, too, as much as Viktor did, but he didn’t know how to explain that to Mel, any more than he knew how he was going to take care of them both. “But there’s nothing I can do. I can’t fix this. I tried.”

“Jayce…” Mel put her hand on his shoulder. She was near enough that he caught a whiff of her perfume, warm and subtly sweet. “I can see that you’re struggling—and I’m not the only one. You’re coming to meetings unprepared or missing them entirely. Your own staff can hardly reach you. You look like you haven’t slept in a week. Then there are the optics of your—situation, as you call it, with Mr. Novak.”

“The optics?”

Mel paused, just for a moment, in a way that made Jayce think this was all somewhat distasteful to her. “There are rumors that you claimed his child,” she said.

Their eyes met, and Jayce felt, not for the first time, that Mel was looking right through him, to his core. She had a way of seeing people, really seeing them, that he would never master.

“I hadn’t heard that,” he said, his mouth abruptly dry.
“Is it true?”

Jayce’s heart did a slow, painful somersault. “What does it matter?”

She hummed. “I think you are accustomed to taking up a great deal of his attention,” she said, and though her tone was mild, her words rocked him back in his seat. “But you cannot expect him to spend all hours in that lab with you anymore. Things will be very different for him.”

“I know that,” Jayce said, feeling a pang of bitterness that surprised him. The months after the baby was born would be more difficult than she knew.

“Having children changes your priorities,” Ximena went on, as if he hadn’t spoken. “You’ll understand when you have children of your own—and you could stand to get a move on, I think.”

“Mom—”

“I’m not getting any younger.”

He fought not to wince. “Mom,” he tried again.

“Mrs. Armstrong asked again if you would like to meet her granddaughter,” Ximena said. “The opera singer. Very accomplished—and very pretty, from what I’ve seen in the papers.”

“I remember,” he said with a sigh. Mrs. Armstrong was the head of his mother’s civic group, forever angling for good marriages for her grandchildren. There was a time, not so long ago, when Jayce would not have been considered a worthy prospect. “And I’m not interested. Actually, Mom, I’ve been meaning to tell you—”

“Pining away is no good, either,” Ximena added, fixing him with a look that pinned him in place. “Though I’m sure you realize this by now.”

“What?”

She waved off the comment. “What is it you need to tell me?”

Ximena pulled Jayce into the kitchen after dinner, while Viktor was in the other room wrapping himself back up in his coat and scarf. “You did not tell me he was so poorly,” she whispered, her brow creased with concern.

Jayce’s mouth went abruptly dry. He hadn’t told her about the diagnosis yet, either, and the longer he waited, the more difficult it became. For now, if Viktor appeared weakened or wan, the natural assumption for most people to make was that he was simply having a difficult pregnancy.

“He’s—private about these things,” Jayce managed at last.

She shot him a disapproving look, like she had expected a better answer. Then her

my immediate thought upon seeing this scene was a few panels from AKIRA but I feel like there are a lot of other possible sources of inspiration for this visual (though I would argue the final Jayce and Vikor sequence may have drawn a lot of inspo from the climax of that manga)
