It's always good for ecologists to play with a different ecosystem for a weekend!

One of my favorite stops at the Minnesota state fair is the fish pond at the dnr building.

Found another cool surface water map for the Upper Mississippi River! This one is from the 1960's!

There's now a package to make your own river elevation models in python! github.com/OpenTopograp... As a river restoration scientist this is super helpful in identifying the underlying behavior of a river. Below is an example of Pool 1 in the Mississippi River.

Definitely check out the atlas feature in QGIS to mass produce data driven maps. In my river restoration work I created a template map that compares modern aerial imagery to a historic 1890 ground survey of the Mississippi River but QGIS spits out the comparison at every river mile, all 855! #rivers

Working on a river restoration conceptual figure that incorporates the five features of ecological stability (Donohue 2016): resilience, resistance, variance, persistence, and robustness. What do you think? #rivers #ecology 🌎

I have always said a time machine would be the best tool for a restoration ecologist. Historical maps are the closest thing that can help us picture the past. Check out the USGS historic map viewer for the Upper Mississippi River. Below is an example comparison.

Does anybody else love older ecology books? This gem is from Ecological Methodology by Krebs.

I'm grateful to attend the MN DNR roundtable. For those of you that haven't heard, this last November, Minnesotans overwhelmingly voted to support the lottery driven conservation fund for the state. It is one of the only times in the state's history where every county approved it. #conservation

Isn't it crazy how much the Mississippi River has changed in the last two centuries? Check out this graphic on sediment dynamics. #rivers

So after all that digging in old USGS reports, check out this comparison of discharge for the Mississippi River in Saint Paul, MN I made in #R! #rivers

Nothing like finding a cool river map from an old USGS report. This one is from 1901.

Even though I'm technically not in academia anymore, I'm very happy to see that I reached the 100 citations mark on google scholar today.

Here was my office yesterday, scouting the Klarälven for a field study commencing this summer. Lots of restored river sections as well as a couple dams. Let's see if we can help the salmon with their migration. 🐠
