Chillingham Castle, Northumberland, claims to be one of the most haunted castles in the UK. The grounds are attractive (especially the formal Italian gardens), but the castle itself feels like a hoarder's antique shop, although nothing is for sale (other than the usual souvenirs in the gift shop).

Howick Hall, Northumberland. The home of Earl Grey (and his tea). The gardens are beautiful, as are the 3 rooms you can see in the house (still lived in by his descendants).

Spencer House in London, UK is a little known gem. Lovingly restored to its original look, it is a jaw-dropping peak inside an 18th century mansion.

Beamish museum, County Durham. A large museum with lots of buildings relocated to show a coal village from 1900, a British town from 1950s, a Georgian manor house etc. Worth a visit if you are nearby.

Charterhouse, London - a hidden gem. It used to house the famous independent school, but is now only an almshouse. Beautiful Tudor architecture. Well worth a visit.
