A lot to take away on the first day of the conference. 2 highlights for me - 1. learning about Fanny Goldstein - what an incredible person 2. during the Keynote, we learned about the Yiddish speaking nun (whose also fluent in Hebrew). Looking forward to more of the conference.

was one Hebrew work, A mishnah - Bava ḳama mi-Masekhet Neziḳin - printed in the Netherlands, 1637. This work consisted of the Hebrew text, a Latin translation, and a commentary. This work would be the first Hebrew work the @librarycongress.bsky.social would acquire.

Over Shabbat, I relaxed with the latest issue of Fleishigs magazine. In this fun issue they have a number of pastry dishes, recipes for tuna, and if you are traveling to Toronto, kosher places to eat and places to visit

One example is Sefer Mitsvot Gadol printed by Gershom Soncino, which has a beautiful history. Acquired by the Library of Congress in 1930, this copy has Soncino's inscription. Only so much provenance data could be inputted into the bib record as can be seen here:

I am very excited to announce a new course offered through @jewishlibraries.bsky.social Introduction to Rare Hebrew Cataloging, taught by Louis Meiselman of the University of Pennsylvania. This course will cover rare book cataloging as it relates to Hebraica books.

One of the first Hebrew Incun. I cataloged was Sefer ha-Ikarim (Joshua Soncino, 1485). Acquired by LC in 1930 from Otto Vollbehr, who acquired it in 1912 from Ludwig Rosenthal. Copy incomplete. 1 leaf is in ms and cover is a Hebrew ms.

Today I did a short presentation on the Tur Yoreh Deah ( Eliezer b. Alantansi in Hijar, Spain, 1486) for @jewishlibraries.bsky.social The focus was on the double-leaf signature.

Yesterday (Dec. 29) was the anniversary of the first sale of the 1488 printing of the Sefer Mitsvot ha-Gadol, printed by Gershom Soncino in Soncino, Italy in December 19, 1488. This copy was sold on Dec. 29, 1488. held in the Library of Congress:

This copy was acquired by the Library of Congress in 1930 as part of a larger collection. The previous owner was Otto Vollbehr. Vollbehr acquired this copy in 1912 from the Ludwig Rosenthal Antiquariat.

It is a beautiful copy - come check it out.
