As temperatures drop and home heating systems start up, we’re reminding residents to stay safe this season. Have your chimney inspected and cleaned every year by a WETT-certified technician to remove creosote buildup and check for damage. Also, make sure your carbon monoxide (CO) alarms are working.

Lithium-ion batteries are rechargeable batteries that can store a lot of power in a small size. This makes them very useful — but they can also be dangerous if not handled properly. They’re found in many everyday items like cell phones, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, and e-scooters.

Lithium-ion batteries should never go in the garbage, blue recycling bag, or green cart. They can spark and cause fires in garbage trucks and at waste facilities. Instead, bring them to a safe recycling location. Drop-off sites and accepted items can vary by battery visit: www.halifax.ca/recycling

Before you buy anything with a lithium-ion battery, do your homework. Check the packaging and product for a mark from a nationally recognized testing lab—that stamp means it meets real safety standards. Many products sold online and in stores don’t, and that can seriously increase your risk of fire.
October 9, 2025 at 12:53 PM
Anything with a lithium-ion battery—phones, laptops, e-bikes, power tools—can become a fire hazard if it’s not charged safely. Always use the charger that came with the device or one approved by the manufacturer. If the cord only works when you bend it just right, it’s time to replace it!
