Magnus was born some thirty years prior to the Seventh Umbral Calamity to Ragnar Anvilguard and Arnja Firesight (the ‘nj’ sound should be made with the mouth open), members of a sect known as the Flame of Rhalgr. Strictly apolitical, members of the Flame of Rhalgr were divided into smiths who forged the weapons used by the more martial sects such as the Fist of Rhalgr, fighters who defended Rhalgr’s flame, and prophet-priests who inhaled the intoxicating smoke of their volcano home in order to receive visions from their god. Surnames of members refer to their duties: Forgestrike for the smiths, Anvilguard for the fighters, and Firesight for the prophets. Children are taught the basics of all three paths, and young Magnus showed his inheritance early on; his father was widely recognized for his speed and strength alike, and rumor has it that even the Fist of Rhalgr had attempted to lure him away from the Flame. When the Garleans invaded, the Flame of Rhalgr was driven underground, but thanks to the inhospitable territory in which they made their home they managed to stay hidden for many years, employing some of the Anvilguard as runners to distribute the works of their forges to the various resistance movements. It was on returning from just such a run in his twenty-fifth year that Magnus returned home to find that the Garleans had won their way through into the Flame’s volcano stronghold. There were no survivors, and Magnus knew his duty. In three clay pots packed with earth, he gathered the embers of Rhalgr’s sacred flame, knowing that if it were to be extinguished, so too would all fires throughout the world; Rhalgr would no longer come to the aid of mortal men. He bore them back across Gyr Abania to the largest seat of the resistance at Rhalgr’s Reach--and there he stayed, grieving and struggling with depression, for the better part of a year’s time. In that time, several groups of the resistance came together; the resistance became the Resistance, with greater organization and whisperings of potential support from the Grand Companies...though none ever materialized. Eventually, after months of helping to train scrawny and underfed but scrappy laborers into fighters worthy of the name, Magnus set out from Rhalgr’s Reach once more, leaving behind his parents’ dream of a free Ala Mhigo for the stability and security of a life far from the Garlean occupation. Stubbornness and skill saw him enlisted in the ranks of the Immortal Flames, though with Ul’dahn typical poor regard for the poor and the foreign-born, he was passed over for promotion numerous times. It was five years to the day after the Garleans entered the mountain that Bahamut scorched Carteneau, and neither the Immortal Flames nor Magnus himself thought much of his survival. ‘Rhalgr’s own cursed luck,’ his superiors called it, ‘just like his kind to live through what kills others and draw the Destroyer’s eye down on those around him.’ But he was oath-sworn to service, and so he served on. It was not until he survived an encounter with Ifrit untempered several years later that he came to the attention of the Immortal Flames, and thereafter the Scions as well, introduced to Y’shtola by way of Y’mhitra’s hope that he and others like him from the Flames could learn the art of summoning. And it is only then that Magnus is forced to reveal his greatest secret, an artifact he has kept hidden for years: a water crystal of rare purity, found on that long trek from the Flame of Rhalgr’s stronghold to Rhalgr’s Reach. The first of his Crystals of Light, joined by a second when he stood in the presence of Ifrit and remained his own man. <the beginning>
