The toyon in my yard is having a great year. The birds are loving it too. AKA California Christmas berry or California holly, this member of the rose family is a seasonal delight along our coast & foothills

Political cartoon from the Netherlands, where the far right will likely win the next round of elections. It seems we have something in common with our Dutch neighbors, sadly

Everyone should know this term. It’s part of the right wing playbook (see Charlie Kirk, Matt Walsh, Trump, et al.) Vulnerable groups, like trans folks, are frequent targets.

More pretty things from my East Bay garden. Lots of hummingbirds, too, thanks to California fuchsia aka “hummingbird trumpet”

From my East Bay garden. Late summer is a beautiful time for buckwheat, Eriogonum sp. I especially like the patchy look they get before going to seed.

More from #RingMountain, where serpentine soil slows the spread of nonnative grasses, giving native plants an advantage, along with endemic and endangered ones

It’s Tiburon mariposa lily season, a highly endangered species, limited to a few acres of serpentine outcrops on Ring Mountain, Marin County. Alien satellite dishes come to mind

Delightful color variations of Douglas’ iris, Iris douglasiana, observed in serpentine chaparral and oak woodland in Marin County. Rainbow goddess, indeed

Who likes to geek out on wild cucumber? There are 2 species in Oakland Hills, Marah fabacea and oregana. Sometimes, they hybridize, although I still don’t know what that looks like. These “cucumbers” are inedible btw

Oakland Hills hike. I still can’t believe this is in a major metro area. Found saxifrage and oso berry, a delightful member of the rose family that I look forward to seeing every March.

Thanks to recent precipitation, serpentinite’s blue-green color really pops. This is CA’s official state rock, due to its prevalence and impact on the diversity of our native plants.

Serpentine chaparral, a delightful feature of the California coast. Plants are smaller and endemic, due to harsh soil conditions. I’ll have to return later when more things are blooming
