An image of one of the tunnels that encases the laser beam of LIGO. It spans four kilometers and runs off into the distance. A mirror from the original LIGO machine that was used to refract light for the measurements of gravitational waves. It is held up by one piano wire. The mirror is encased in aluminum and has a lot of copper sensors attached to it. A side image of the newly updated LIGO beam system (I think the update was in 2015). This apparatus is held up with silica fibers. An image of auxiliary buildings at the LIGO facility. Air chillers and a water reservoir with the LIGO logo are in the shot.
