That's pretty much what they're going for, even using real dolls for modeling
We have the real-life dolls used to create the character models in DQVII Reimagined here at the SQUARE ENIX TGS booth. They’re so perfect. 😭😭

To me it's less about the models and maybe how bright everything is that throws it off, but overall I enjoy the puppet proportion look
