‘Thank you for being honest. I will also be honest. I’m extremely hurt by what you’ve done and I have no idea how we move forward when I feel so betrayed. You should go and relax for a couple of hours. You’ll be coming to work with me today.’

‘You don’t trust me to be alone with them.’

‘No, I don’t.’ The kindest thing I could manage was to let him cry in private for a while. ‘We leave in about two hours. You may go.’

I followed him upstairs after his bedroom door closed. Jordan was still asleep when I looked in, so I went to see Mason. He was watching a video on his laptop, but paused it when I entered the room.

‘You look sad, Master.’

‘I am, baby boy, that’s why I came for snuggles. Show me what you’re watching.’

‘It’s just random arty stuff, Master.’

He snuggled on my lap and we spent three quarters of an hour watching someone pouring acrylic paint onto canvas in novel ways, someone weaving floral headdresses for a bridal party, and someone upcycling a coffee table with stencils. It was cute, and exactly what I needed.

‘You watch this kind of thing a lot?’

‘I do, Master. I find it interesting. Can I ask a question please?’

‘You want to know why Albie is crying?’ We could hear the occasional noise through the wall, so it was an obvious question.

‘I do. Albie’s crying and him and Jordan were crying last night and they’re both not at work. Everything feels weird and you’re sad. I’m scared, Master.’

Extended periods of self-reflection were something I’d gone to extreme lengths to avoid for my entire life. But when moving was agonising and even breathing too hard hurt, laying still and thinking about your past and future life choices, was pretty much all that was left. There were only so many times you could look around a room that went bed, dressing table, wardrobe, chair, door, chest of drawers, bedside table, bed. Even if you were beyond happy and grateful to be there.

Concluding I was the same carefree, hole-obsessed, fun chasing, irresponsible, shallow, party boy, amadan I had been at nineteen, sucked. That was fine at nineteen. By your mid-twenties it was pushing it. At thirty-four, still with only enough possessions to fit in a backpack and saddlebags, it was approaching tragic.

I’d seen plenty of those guys hit their mid-forties and spied the fear in their eyes as they hoped beyond hope they were still mysterious and interesting enough to be included. I couldn’t let that be me.

If I even lived that long.

I must have ridden past three hospitals to get here. Convinced I was dying, I didn’t want to be saved I just wanted to be at home where someone would care. Dramatic I may be, but I wanted my final moments to be somewhere real and there was only one place that fitted the bill.

I almost got that final wish. Kit hadn’t got a locum in to cover for him so he could sit by my bedside for four days for nothing. But my lung had reinflated. My brain didn’t bleed or swell inside my skull. My broken ribs and cracked pelvis would heal on their own. And I hadn’t had any internal bleeding or developed any infections.

I’d say I’d been given a second chance, but my second chances second chances had run out of second chances.

I’d been given a last chance.

I ended up going with 'Five' rather than 'fifth' for today's snippet, because the instances of fifth were too spoilery. I like this one. It's more about Tank and Piper's relationship than the conversation they're having, and there's something very special about that.

There started one of my favourite things. We lifted weights and we talked. Tank was the first man in my life who’d listened to me. He asked questions and he listened to the answers. Sometimes, he’d picked me up on recent behaviour and I was the one who listened.

Over the years, I’d tried my best, but I couldn’t recall a single conversation longer than a few brief exchanges with the man whose name was on my birth certificate. The folder in my brain labelled most precious memories, included hours and hours of weights room chats with Tank.

‘You’re still thinking of trying to claim all five?’

‘I am.’

‘Tell me why.’

‘Because I can’t choose between them and I don’t want to. I let myself get invested in them as people and I have fallen in love with every single one. The connections feel real to me, and I think to them too. All the connections. The idea of losing even one makes me anxious and nauseated. I love being able to give them what they need in the dungeon, but I love the fact I’m starting to work out their needs outside it just as much. I want to be the one that gives them what they need. I want their happiness to be my responsibility. All of them.’

‘You know how hard it would be to manage five subs?’

‘Jim told me to expect to never experience peace and quiet again. I took that on board, and all his other advice. I took it to my journal, and
I’m ok with it. I need a bit of chaos and unpredictability in my life, or I get bored. But I also need stable and solid and genuine, and I haven’t had that in a long time. I’ve never had it in a relationship. I want to be that for them as much as I need it for me. I want to be their safe place.’

‘Ok. I believe you.’
