Please leave a message after the beep.
Also, while I'm here: Can Bluesky please automate a thread counter? Should be pretty trivial technically to display "1/10" on the first skeet in a ten-skeet thread, and so on, without consumers needing to spend five of their 240 characters keeping their own count.

...however, I don't actually think the solution lies in casting this as an individual problem. The way a platform structures social interactions plays a much bigger role. That's what the last third of this piece covers:

"What do?," you ask.

So, like, if you're looking for resources to conduct a PERSONAL referendum, that's what this post is, largely:

"Great, thanks Chelsea for raining on the parade"

I'm serious, folks. Can we take this opportunity to conduct a referendum on the way we show up social media? I think we need it.

Because "Old Twitter was paradise" is downright revisionist history.

Fourth, and maybe most importantly, I hope we've learned from "Old Twitter" that a platform we love can fall victim to tech's enshittificatory undercurrents the moment the VC money runs out.

That's a thing I've called out about Bluesky, specifically, here:

Third, I hope we've learned from "Old Twitter" that sometimes our genius take, which we get to broadcast to thousands of people with zero workshopping, sometimes turns out to—surprise—lack nuance in ways that hurt us collectively.

Remember this mortgage thing?

Second, I hope we've learned from "Old Twitter" that this specific style of interaction on social media is designed to ESCALATE disagreements; not actually mediate productive community conversations.

Remember that batshit four-day Calendly fistfight?

First, I hope we've learned from "Old Twitter" that when you write content on someone else's platform, you may eventually regret that you don't control that content

That's not a Twitter-specific thing; Jenny Zhang offers the chilling example of LiveJournal:

...I've ALSO seen a number of folks describe Bluesky as "just like old Twitter!"

I don't think that can happen, folks. I don't think we can get "old Twitter" back, and I hope our social media future focuses more on evolving how we interact online that it does on recreating old Twitter.

Pulp fiction. All muppets except for Vincent Vega.

At the scene showing Vincent's death, Vincent ALSO becomes a muppet, the way Spongebob Squarepants depicts "dead, dessicated spongebob" as a dry cleaning sponge on a kitchen counter.
